More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

This project aims to increase awareness of age issues and health of the elderly. Due to economic constraints and a lack of understanding, this section of the community is neglected, undernourished and suffering increasingly from chronic health problems. This is becoming more prominent with 1 in 7 people in the region being over 60 by 2025 (98 million). Many of the elderly women in Guatemala have no one to help them having lost sons, husbands and brothers in the civil war.

Activities

By providing food for the old people of Guatemala, we will aid them and their families. With the children involved in distribution we will also foster a transmission of knowledge across the generations, keeping the indigenous communities alive.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Each year we aim to feed 200 old people and benefit their communities with increased dialogue between generations.

Project Message

The elderly have often been neglected as there simply isn't the money for families to feed so many people. It is not that families don't want to feed their elderly relatives, they simply can't.
- Elena Siquinajay de Suy, Indigenous Leader, San Andrés Itzapa

Latest Update from the Field

The elderly continue to receive their food and more to come in 2010

By Dom Williams - Director, December 28, 2009 10:49 AM

WaitingThe men wait their turnGroup
The Plan Ancianos has been a huge success this year, with over 100 famlies benefitting from the scheme. Each month they have received their parcels of oil, rice, pasta, soap and other useful items. In 2010, we plan to roll out the plan in another community aswell, instantly doubling the size of the scheme, though the benefits are showing, with the younger children now eating a bit more, as the older generation have their food as part of the Plan Ancianos.
Thank you to all our donors who make this possible.
Happy New Year
cheers
