'Greening' a Girls School in South Africa

For 10 years, the SA College for Tourism has been training young, impoverished women from across southern Africa, giving them the skills, self-confidence and qualifications to successfully enter the tourism industry. In order to save funds and be more environmentally responsible, we want to 'green' our campus by replacing our solar panels and purchasing small appliances which are more power-efficient.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The College is situated in South Africa's arid Karoo, where water is a precious resource. Accommodating over 100 people, the College has an extremely high water usage, which it hopes to minimize, becoming more environmentally friendly. The College relies soley on Donor funding to carry out its activities, and it is therefore important that funds are used as efficiently as possible. The costs incurred for water and electricity usage at the College are one of its highest costs, with no returns.

How will this project solve this problem?

By minimizing these costs, the College will be able to use donor funding more effectively towards its intended purpose; training young marginalized women, while at the same time minimizing its environmental footprint.

Potential Long Term Impact

By using waste water from the College to maintain the grounds, the College will become more sustainable and lower its running costs. The use of energy-saving solar panels, light bulbs and heaters will further reduce the running costs. By allowing students to be involved, they will be introduced to ecologically friendly practices, and the principles of environmental sustainability.
