Joy and gratitude...

By Lynn Cole | Executive Director

Greetings-

Thanks for your generous support of RISE and children in Angola! Many gifts were given as part of GlobalGiving's GivingTuesday campaign on 11/28/2023 - GivingTuesday is a day that encourages people to do good, a movement created in 2012 to unleash the power of radical generosity around the world. GlobalGiving offered a $1,200,000 Incentive Fund to match the day's donations. You contributed $20,550 to RISE, with a proportional match of $7,259, totaling $27,809! Thanks also to those of you that contribute monthly, or with gift cards... all resulting in giving more kids the chance to go to school year after year!

Macala was a joint project with ExxonMobil / Esso Angola, and these funds were used to complete the 7-classroom school. Dedicated on Tuesday, 12/12/2023, the school was handed over to the community, Ministry of Education, and local Administration. There was much joy and celebration, ribbon-cutting, and speeches, with many in attendance, including the Provincial Governor, Minister of Oil, ANPG, Sonangol, and ExxonMobil officials, local Administrators, Ministry of Education, RISE Angola, parents, students, and the community.

Katrina Fisher, ExxonMobil Angola President, shared that "one of the most effective ways for young people to have the opportunity to develop their potential and make their dreams come true, is through access to quality primary education. To see these students receive such a beautiful school, and witness the joy on their faces, and the faces of the community members that joined them was such an incredible moment."

The students will benefit with access to education in a well-built, safe structure, with clean water and bathrooms. Some children had attended class in tin rooms, which were hit by strong winds and destroyed, and so they are excited to have real classrooms for the first time! The school is in their neighborhood, which benefits both the learners and their families. Additionally, the principal, teachers, and staff will have jobs, and 80+ people benefited from employment throughout the construction process.

You helped make this possible, and the impact is ongoing - thank you!
