Fishing Pond is a small village along the northeastern coast of Trinidad. The main economic activities in the village are agriculture, fishing, and very recently eco-tourism. However, a large percentage of the adult population is unemployed due to the fact that there are very few commercial enterprises in the region. Our project will deliver IT resources to the school to improve the learning process for the students.
Fishing Pond Primary School has over a hundred students, who have little access to the educational tools needed to create environments conducive to learning. Many of the students have never accessed the internet and do not know what it is like to use it to enhance their learning or to communicate with other persons, especially persons living overseas. Their parents do not have the money to buy them the government prescribed text books and other learning tools
Shashamane Sunrise wants to ensure that the students at Fishing Pond have access to the internet. We believe that exposure to e-learning will help to quickly improve teaching methods and, by extension, learning at the school. Having internet connectivity will increase the students' exposure to a gamut of knowledge and put them on par with students from other schools, even if they do not have the prescribed texts.
We hope that through the internet the children at Fishing Pond will gain valuable insight about the world around them and become more equipped to deal with life after they leave school. These students will in turn be able to make more significant contributions to their community and the global arena. They will be able to lend more assistance to others in the community who did not benefit from proper education. The adult population can also benefit from the computer use.
