This project will provide 300 street children in Vellore, Tamilnadu State, South India, with alternative education, vocational skill training, health and nutritional care and social and entrepreneurship skill development thereby reducing negative impact of vulnerable environment on them by 2018.
India is the home to the world's largest population of street children, estimated to be 18 million. Poverty, urbanization, rapid economic growth, the breakdown of families, and domestic violence are the most immediate causes for it. The street children in Vellore are at the risk of disease and abuse and exploitation. Once they are on the streets, they are off the radar screen for government, and public safety nets. This project will facilitate them to come up in their lives.
CARE will provide 300 street children in Vellore with alternative education, vocational skill training, and nutrition, physical and mental health care including counselling, art therapy, music theatre, health, social and life skill training, and entrepreurship skill training.
The project will educate 300 street children allowing them to be empowered with integrated life coping skills, self reliance and self respect and improved with educational, vocational, health, social, nutritional, and socio-economic status. A few out comes: School dropout rate reduced to o % from 25%. At least 70 children aged 16-21 are working and earning sufficient income for their livelihood. Early health seeking behavior increased by 80% among the street children aged 5-21 years.
