SDI empowers teenage mothers and their families to become leaders and promoters of reproductive health, family planning and sustainable livelihood in their communities. Consequently, they will become agents for change in adolescent pregnancy, child bearing, teenage abortion, education, development, growth and contribute in making a positive change in the society. Women are agents of change. Invest in teen mothers, improve their communities and the world at large.
Teen mothers in Cameroon face significant threats to their health and well being (HIV and AIDS pandemic, high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), maternal morbidity and/or mortality. Teen pregnancy and motherhood are associated with many societal issues including, lower educational levels, family systems breakdown, child hawking, higher rates of poverty, social stigma and other poorer "life outcomes" in children of teen mothers. Teen pregnancy and child bearing increases daily.
SDI will provide learning and sharing opportunities in communities with formal and informal education for life and livelihood enhancement. Communities will be empowered to build self sustaining and independent personalities which will serve as agents of change in promoting adolescent's education and development within their communities. Teen mothers and communities sensitization and education remain the way forward. Our greatest challenge is obtaining resources to address this epidemic.
This project will serve as a catalyst for adolescents to delay sexual initiation, reduce the risk among sexually active youths, and reduce the incidence of pregnancy and/or STIs by targeting 100 adolescents and teenage mothers yearly in 10 communities of 3 identified regions in Cameroon. By 2015, SDI will establish an Institute to provide life and livelihood education to pregnant and nursing teenage mothers, thus giving teenage mothers an opportunity to become leaders of their own cause
Teenage pregnancy and child bearing continues to be an impediment to improvement in the educational, economic and social status of teenage mothers. Lets change attitudes and empower teens in Cameroon
