Empower Highly Outcast Children and Their Families

Mayama develops life skills in 195 children & their families who face poverty, abuse, and violence in Mexico. With an innovative program, we empower their intellectual, emotional, physical, artistic & social abilities, so that they can take assertive decisions and become self sufficient members of society. We also carry out our "Ready for school" program with the 15% of our children who have never been to school, so that they can get the basic skills needed to start their studies successfully.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Mayama's beneficiaries come from 5 neighborhoods, which according to the National Population Council, are 'highly outcast',this is: five or more people living in one room, families earning the minimum wage, lacking of basic services (no water supply), 60% of our children are in risk of child labor, foster homes and delinquency. 90% of them suffer family abuse and violence, most of the parents have no schooling or have dropped out of elementary. Children present severe delay in their development.

How will this project solve this problem?

We provide skills development for the children and have a parallel intervention with their families for their parents to be aware of the importance of sending them to school, decrease the drop out rate, increase child protection rights (identity, education, health and shelter), and decrease family violence and child abuse. One hour spent in Mayama means one hour less in the streets. With the community workshops, we give them tools to improve their living conditions (hygiene and health).

Potential Long Term Impact

We will level the serious delay in 210 children's development, and give them analytical and problem solving methodologies, in order for them to take better life decisions based on well-being. If we achieve to have them free of addictions, delinquency, teenage pregnancy and life in streets, and motivate them to work for a life free of violence, with honest ways of living, there will be 195 more functional families that otherwise would continue living in poverty and violence.
