Challenge

Kibera is the largest slum in East Africa. With such vast and widespread poverty opportunities like attending the East African Jump Rope Competition are a distant dream for the youth in Kibera. Jump rope, like any sport, provides a healthy outlet for physical activity while teaching leadership, teamwork, and commitment. Help these youth expand their horizons and realize their potential by participating in this regional competition and workshop opportunity.

Solution

Sending these youth to the East Africa Jump Rope Competition will expose them to life outside of Kibera. In the first year of the program the jumpers from Kibera gained recognition at the EAJRC and since then have performed around Nairobi. Their most visible performance was at Nyayo National Stadium (Kenya's biggest stadium) as the half time performance for a national soccer game. The regional competition provides exposure to new people and places and helps develop critical technical skills.

Long-Term Impact

Exposure to new people, places, and ideas offers youth important new perspectives and experiences with which they shape their behaviors and decisions. Jump rope offers opportunities that many in Kibera lack - travel outside the slum, performing at prestigious venues, and the confidence that comes from a support network of peers and coaches that believe in you. These youth gain the skills and knowledge to help them reach beyond their circumstances and create a better life for themselves.
