This project will continue availing education support to 1000 000 learners; homework sessions, tutoring, tertiary placements and career guidance, to ensure that every child who begins grade 1 in 2018 will pass grade 12 or the equivalent; and all the learners who matriculate in 2030 will access post-school opportunities (learnerships, tertiary institutions, employment or entrepreneurial activities); and that all these learners will within four years of matriculating have a dignified living.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
As of 2011, only 4.2% of South Africans aged 18-19 were enrolled at higher education institutions. In all international tests, South African learners consistently perform at the lowest possible level. Learners attending township schools experience high dropout, poor academic performance in all subjects, poor matric results, very limited access to tertiary institutions, poor access to post-school opportunities, and limited opportunities to voice their opinions.
How will this project solve this problem?
The project aims to enable disadvantaged youth to pull themselves and each other out of poverty through education. Since 2005, IkamvaYouth has consistently achieved 85 - 100 % matric pass, 67 % of our learners accessed tertiary education. This far above the national average which is only 10% for black youth. Our learners are twice as likely to take maths and science due to the support we provide. Learners than give back to their communities by coming back to tutor helping their peers.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project envisages that all the learners in South Africa who begin grade 1 in 2018 (estimated at 1 000 000) will pass Grade 12 or the equivalent; that all the learners who matriculate in 2030 will access post-school opportunities (learnerships, tertiary institutions, employment or entrepreneurial activities), and that all young people who engage in these post-school opportunities will within four years of matriculating have a dignified living.
