Classes will introduce the children of El Desafio to the digital world, providing them a means for self-expression and offering alternative methods for learning in a fun way. Trough gaming, virtual simulations and use of technology we run an innovative program with kids and community.
The participants are 55 children from 7 to 15 years old of Rosario, Argentina, living in extreme poverty and at risk. In Argentina there are 6 million children living in these conditions. Lacking many basic needs, these kids become socially excluded and disconnected from the world by the digital divide, with no access to new technologies and new media.
Twice a week the children have computer lessons, gaming workshops and blogging, for the older kids. Given their social and economic status, these children often lack a voice, but this program provides them an avenue to share their stories!
The program gives the children equal educational opportunities and is an 'eye opener' for them. Besides the obvious motivation boost the new tools provide, they start seeing things from another perspective and dreaming of a future.
We cannot fight poverty with 'poor' programs. This is a perfect example of high excellence standards in social work. Not innovation for innovation's sake, but to really make a positive change!
