Lots of news for you!

Three of us recently returned from visiting students, administrators, and schools in South Sudan. We also visited schools and students in Northern Uganda, since nearly a million South Sudanese live in refugee camps there, seeking safety from the fighting in their own country.

Let me share some exciting news from this trip. Our team consisted of three Girls With Books! board members: Donna, Lawrence, and myself. On arriving at the schools in Northern Uganda, we were immediately immersed in heartwarming experiences witnessing the positive impact Girls With Books! is making on the lives of the South Sudanese refugee students.

The dedication of these students to education has left a lasting impression on us, and the supportive environment fostered by teachers, students, and caregivers is truly inspiring. Unfortunately, we couldn’t meet this year’s high school freshmen during our visit as they are still with their families in the camps since they were expected to report to school a week later.

The warm welcome extended to our team reflects a strong sense of community and it showcases the collective effort invested in empowering these young minds with education, a promising future, and opportunities.

A highlight of our visit was the mesmerizing South Sudanese Acholi traditional dance performance by a group of supported students, bringing joy to our hearts and highlighting the richness and diversity within the communities we serve.

Continuing our school visits, we brought students from three different schools to be together in one school. We had a great meeting and interviewed a couple of them, including Fiona, whom our team accompanied to her family in the refugee camp to retrieve books she needed in her preparation for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). Visiting the camp with Fiona was a painful reminder of life in a refugee camp.

As we press on with our mission, we’re filled with hope and determination, knowing that together we are making a meaningful impact on the lives of these girls. Your firm support plays a crucial role in transforming dreams into reality.

With gratitude,
