Education breaks child marriages for orphan girls

By Jeyapaul | Director

Educational support for orphan girls

The educational support has been building the lives of young orphan girls in rural areas of Namakkal and Salem. With gender bias issues very prominent in the rural areas, especially girls under the care of grand parents or widow women; they are not allowed to pursue higher education and even given to marriages at very early age. The support through Buds of Christ and GlobalGiving has built the hopes and dreams of young girls.

The lives of young girls like…

Hema, an orphan child under the care of her aunt and uncle, has been a good performer from her 10th grade and she always desired to study for higher education. But there were many marriage proposals that came in, with timely sensitization with the care takers, Hema is now doing her first year master’s degree in sociology. She also enjoys working with children and wants to pursue her field in the social sector.

Harshini is another child under the care of a widow mother, who works as a school helper. The amount she receives is very small that only support the daily needs of the family. She is pursuing her first year Bachelor’s degree in English.

Aarthi is orphan child looked after by aged grandparents. They work as daily wage workers. She also has a sibling sister who is in school and in 12th grade. Her dream was to be a fashion designer and she is currently doing her 2nd year bachelor’s degree in fashion designing

Kamala is the second daughter of a widow mother, who works as a coolie worker. Her elder sister was married early due to pressure from the relatives, but when it came to Kamala, her mother stood firm in educating her to do bachelor’s degree in commerce.

These are few examples of young girls supported through Buds of Christ and GlobalGiving educational support programme. The support has paved way for young girls to dream bigger, break the challenges of early marriage, restriction of education for girls and even empowerment of caretakers to support the decision of young girls. Currently 16 young girls are pursuing Undergraduate courses in both Namakkal and Salem.
