Community Supports Growing Needs for Meals

By Bill Miller | Director of Development

Since the recession hit in 2008, the number of daily meals served at Portland Rescue Mission has surged by more than 28%.  We project that we'll provide 290,000-295,000 free meals for the homeless community this year.  Thanks to generous support via Global Giving (especially NIKE employees!), we have been able to meet the growing demand and never turn away a homeless guest.

At our Burnside Shelter in Old Town (111 W. Burnside), we offer free breakfast and dinner daily, plus lunches on weekend days.  A meal is often the first step toward building a personal relationship with a broken, lonely person.  Staff and volunteers are well equipped to engage with each guest, show compassion and offer resources, depending on their individual needs.

With relationship and restored identity, many of the homeless men and women begin the healing process.  For those interested, the Mission offers a residential addiction recovery program, which includes counseling, job skills training, mentoring and accountability.

Weekend lunches are a new service at Portland Rescue Mission.  If interested, view our new Global Giving project #10763 and help underwrite the costs.  Because of helpful volunteers and significant donated food, we continue to provide meals at an average of $1.88/meal.  Your support means so much to continue to offer this valuable service to hurting people here in Portland.  Thanks.
