Run, Ride and Rage 4 More Than Roe

By Alicia Kenyon-Diaz | Outreach Coordinator

Run, Ride, and Rage for More than Roe!

Let your rage rise! In light of the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade (1973) our young leadership team had a brilliant idea! They created a nationwide call to action fundraising event, Run, Ride, and Rage for More than Roe. This event was held to give the community a way to act, uplift abortion, and send the message that all people deserve access to the abortion care they need, when they need it, in the community they live in and trust.

Roe was never enough, especially for communities who face barriers to health care, restrictions on abortion care, and all intersectional struggles. Black, Indigenous, and POC communities have been at the frontlines fighting for abortion justice.

Faced with the end of Roe, WHS stood firmly on our historic principles, mission, and values, and provided reproductive health services in a climate where fear, intimidation, and threats of criminalization were rampant. We responded to these outrages by expanding abortion access through telehealth and abortion advocacy in each of our communities.

The purpose of hosting this event was to create a fun, safe, and engaging event advocating
abortion rights, body sovereignty, and supporting our local Women’s Health Specialists
clinic.

The first annual 5k for abortion access event was hosted virtually and in person in Redding, California. Participants pledged to show their support and advocated for abortion justice. The young women leading these efforts provided outreach near and far while educating and providing information about abortion, reproductive justice, and Women’s Health Specialists' services. There were many positive reactions to the event and people were excited to participate how they chose; whether they walked, ran, rode, danced, or raged, they were a part of WHS and its mission to demand abortion access for all. This was a multi-generational event, folks of all ages and many left saying they felt strong and empowered.

A huge highlight of this event was the graphics, people loved the look, name, and whole theme of the event. These graphics were developed by our young women’s leadership team. The event location was beautiful, and the space we held, was a perfect location for community booths, a DJ, and a great space for the public to see us if they didn’t know about WHS. The media coverage truly highlighted how successful the event was. The Outreach Coordinator stepped into her power and provide a powerful message about abortion access and body sovereignty. This speech also inspired another young woman to share her voice and shout “Go abortion” for all to hear! These young voices are in the community working to destigmatize abortion and sexual health. They are demanding a future of absolute liberation. They are strong and they are just getting started. Please click on the link below to see our young activist share their voices on Redding's local news station!

The Run, Ride, & Rage 5K for abortion access had many successes and we hope to build this event in the future. Thank you for being a part of this work and keeping our leaders and work pressing forward!
