Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Krachi East and West districts border Lake Volta. People living in this rural area are poor, and water-born diseases, such as guinea worm, are a serious problem. Only 37% of people have access to clean water and a mere 17% have access to a toilet. Many people rely on polluted rivers for water and have no access to a safe latrine. Incidents of water-related disease are high through the districts. This program will reach 2,100 deprived people in 7 communities with clean water and sanitation.

Activities

Water.org will provide seven communities with access to clean water and hygiene education, and establish local water and sanitation committees. In two pilot communities, construct bio-sand filters.

Potential Long Term Impact

Reduce time spent collecting water and alleviate water conflicts among communities. Decrease water-related disease and improve health. Enhance access to capital; create credit histories among deprived people, especially women.

The program will give impoverished families clean water and access to sanitation. Will also test innovative technological applications to potentially serve more people in Ghana.

This project still needs your donation! The Ghana/Lake Volta project is scheduled to begin construction in September 2009 with Afram Plains Development Organization (APDO), an in-country partner of WaterPartners. Currently, APDO is preparing to further assess the communities that will receive new and rehabilitated boreholes to ensure that the households most in need will be able to access water and build sanitation facilities. These assessments at the start of each project are a necessary step to help WaterPartners and our local partner better understand the specifics of each community in order to best serve their needs.

This area of Ghana is one of the few regions left in the world where Guinea Worm disease is still endemic. The cause of Guinea Worm is the lack of safe drinking water. To contract the illness a human must ingest stagnate water contaminated with guinea worm larvae. This project will assist 2,500 people, to obtain access to safe water and decrease their chances of contracting water-borne illnesses, including Guinea Worm.
