Challenge

After Hurricane Mitch caused devastating floods, Japan financed the construction of levees to protect community resources and livelihood along the Lempa River. Resources are limited and untrained communities are responsible for all levee maintenance. Without routine upkeep the levees will fall into disrepair, putting hundreds of lives and 27 reconstructed communities at risk of devastation. Communities asked for and will benefit from engineers carefully explaining maintenance technique.

Solution

Experienced engineers will conduct workshops that will provide easy-to-understand explanations of technical principles about levee upkeep as a matter of daily routine.

Long-Term Impact

The project will empower the community's men, women, and children to integrate levee maintenance into their daily lives, which is needed to ensure their livelihood.

This project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc).
