Changes

By Ian Wilson | Director

Changes.  Changes in weather patterns.   Changes in how we farm, how we live, how we think.

Climate change is a reality for those of us living on the African continent.  In our lifetimes,  indeed in the past decade, we have watched our traditional rainy and dry seasons change.  We have seen more drought followed by burst of severe flash floods.  We have come to realise that we are not looking at a one-off bad year but an overall change in weather patterns that is now the norm. Drought now is not an event of one extremely dry season but an ongoing situation that can last years.  This is the case in northern Kenya where we see increasing desertification.  For those living in this region, their traditional lifestyle has come under threat and they are faced with having to find alternative ways to feed their families with little government intervention.

Increasing pressure on few resources has led to a constant influx of people to towns like Kitale which are close to the arid regions but also on the edge of better weather conditions and good farmland.  The perception of Kitale as a town of plenty has resulted in ever increasing slums and people needing food and employment.

Each year, CRK takes youths from these families into training programs that can enable them to earn a living quickly and sustainably.  They can then choose whether to stay in the area or to take their skills back to their traditional homeland where it my be of benefit.  In January, we selected the youths to enter our 2024 programme and they have started training.  Our skills for youth training has been successful beyond our wildest expectations.

We would love to be able to see actual change in farming practices and means of income in northern Kenya but in the meantime we work with the displaced.

We always needs your help!
