Begum is 7 years old and lost her parents to HIV and AIDS. We identified her in 2019, and she was living with her maternal uncle and family. Her uncle works as daily wage worker in construction unit and aunt occasionally goes for daily wages work in a hotel. She also has two children who are small. They all live together in a thatched roof.
When we first identified the child, her hygiene was very poor and was with low body weight and skin infections. Her immunity was less, though her was at CD4 - 1221 (born immunity from her mother), viral load was 44,592 which indicated that she was not regular with her medications. The family was visited and supported with timely interventions of nutrition support, emergency medical support for treating minor ailments and educating the caretakers on the importance of medication and adherence.
Earlier, aunt was scared that HIV would affect her children when they relate with Begum which was also sorted out through the group meetings and positive sharing by young people and mothers living with HIV. Good News is that now the child’s immunity has improved and is regular in medication and also practices self hygiene. Her CD4 is 1827 and her viral load has come to target not detected.
This has been possible through home visits, personal counseling, nutritional support, and group sessions. We would also like to thank our donors who have helped us make this change in the life of Begum.
