Summary
Lawyers Against Abuse, LvA, fights corruption in all levels of the justice system in Johannesburg, SA, ensuring that rapists are held accountable for their crimes. We do this by providing direct legal advocacy for victims, many of whom are children.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Interpol just declared South Africa to be the "rape capital of the world", estimating that a woman is raped every 17 seconds. Victims are routinely denied justice by law enforcement, traumatized and silenced when they seek help. LvA is the only organization providing direct legal interventions to victims of rape and sexual violence in the Johannesburg area. 60% of our clients are children. We ensure that the police, courts, and hospitals do their jobs, and that justice is served.
How will this project solve this problem?
LvA represents rape victims at police stations and courts. We file protection orders, monitor investigations, and document corruption. We directly intervene when corrupt police officers and court officials deny services and take bribes from rapists, a common practice in S. Africa. We also intervene when hospitals deny treatment such as HIV prophylactics, rape kits, HIV tests. LvA includes psychological professionals who provide referrals for trauma counseling and court preparation for victims,
Potential Long Term Impact
This project will empower 100 rape victims, many of them children, to reclaim their rights. LvA's representation will bring justice and accountability to a corrupt legal system, in which bribery, victim intimidation, and harassment are common place.
Project Message
"Working with women and children who have been raped and revictimized is heartbreaking, but nothing is more heartbreaking than turning desperate cases away due to lack of funds."
