Recently a member of our team paid a visit to the Rescue Foundation shelter outside Mumbai, where the biogas project is going to take place. Thanks to donors from Global Giving, and donations from the Indian community, we have begun construction of the biogas facility. (photos to follow) We have also reduced the amount of the project cost on the Global Giving site because some of the money needed has been raised from other venues. The survivors are incredibly excited to be a part of this cutting edge project, which will help them and also help the environment and local community. "In India, a woman needs her own income so she can make her own decisions," explains program participant Monu. "Only then will the male members of your family respect you. Having a job and money keeps you from being sold or trafficked or forced to stay in a violent relationship". Shonali adds "I am not a victim. I am an activist working for a better world for myself, my sisters and someday my children and grandchildren" (quotes from a recent womens rights workshop for trafficking survivors).
