Empowering Joy: A Journey from Struggle to Succes

By Samuel Odongo | Administrator Lira

Introducing Joy, an 18-year-old from Bar village Lira District. Her inspiring journey, fueled by the generosity of our donors, stands as a testament to the transformative power of vocational education. Joy's story unfolds in February 2014, when she was residing with her grandmother in the slums of Lira city. Financial constraints were a significant barrier to her education. Despite being a bright mind, Joy was unable to pursue studies beyond primary four due to these financial challenges.

However, her life took a turn when the staff at Platform for Labour Action (PLA) identified her potential. Thanks to PLA's intervention, Joy was enrolled at Ober Primary School, where she completed her primary education in 2021.

In July 2022, Joy embarked on a new chapter in her life. She registered for a Hairdressing course at Vision Ventures Women Entrepreneurs Association. Her dedication and hard work paid off when she successfully completed the course in December 2022, earning a valuable certificate. April 2023 marked a significant milestone in Joy's journey. Along with fellow beneficiaries Linda and Jennifer, they opened a salon at Bar Trading Centre. Today, Joy earns a daily income of 20,000/= exclusive of profits on cosmetic products that are sold. This income not only allows her to meet her basic needs but also enables her to pay school fees for her siblings, who were left in her care after their aunt's passing.

Her story is a shining example of the transformative power of education and the unwavering spirit of resilience. In her own words, "I extend my heartfelt gratitude to PLA for their unwavering support, which has transformed me into a remarkable individual with a hopeful and promising future."
