Last month the Idjwi Island Education Fund completed construction of four new hygienic composting latrines at the Buhumba Primary School. These latrines will help to reduce the occurrence of some communicable diseases and will also generate safe high-quality fertilizer for use in the area. The children and teachers are learning the important process of spreading a biodegradable material after use. Once the composting bin is full, it is locked for six months as its contents transform into fertilizer. A second bin is available for use during that time.
These latrines are the latest component of our health and hygiene program at the school. This program is only possible through the support of our generous donors. Please plan to support us on GivingTuesday, November 28, when donations will be matched through GlobalGiving!
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
If you donate to this project or have donated to this project, you can recieve an email when this project posts a report. You can also subscribe for reports without donating.
