TechnoServe’s Young Women in Enterprise (YWE) program is equipping adolescent girls in Nairobi slums with the skills and support they need to build successful businesses and transform their lives.
Adolescent girls and young women in Kenya face severe obstacles when seeking employment, struggling to overcome entrenched social and economic gender inequality. They are vulnerable to teen marriage and pregnancy, HIV infection and violence. Without clear opportunities for income generation, their families see little worth in supporting their education. TechnoServe and the Nike Foundation believe that these young women have great potential; they just need the right tools and enabling environment
YWE helps young women develop entrepreneurship skills and generate new income-earning opportunities by providing training in business and life skills, networking opportunities, access to mentors, and by hosting a mini-business plan competition.
Investing in young women enables them to chart their own course and determine their own future. Building a culture of entrepreneurship and creating supportive community networks has the power to transform entire communities.
