More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Julio Otoni is a low income community heavily affected by criminal gangs, drugs and guns. Due in part to the lack of alternatives in the community,it is not at all unusual for children as young as 12 to become involved with gang culture. The project engages these young people in activities such as Computing, English, Capoeira, Dance and Arts. As of January 2009 the project does not have funding to continue: please see below how to get involved and sponsor a child's participation in the project

CEMINA has built a Center at the Julio Otoni community which has become a focal point of the community, it is equipped with computers and broadband access and offers a program of activities including Educational Support, IT, Capoeira, Dance and Arts

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Allows 50 young people to receive education and participate in activities they would otherwise not have access to, providing them with a basis to develop their self-esteem and skills for the future and prevent their involvement with Drug Trafficking

Project Message

By being part of the project I got to be in a beach for the first time in my life. Even though Rio is a city by the sea I had never touched salt water in my life and I am 11 years old.
- Marcela Pinheiro, A beneficiary--one of the children of the project
