Share & SaveMore Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesThe World Food Program provides food for 3.3 million of the most vulnerable people in Niger. In a country where 70% of the population lives under the poverty line, and over 80% rely on subsistence farming and cattle raising, crushing poverty and crippling debt continue to undermine the ability of rural families to fend for themselves. WFP feeds malnourished children and their families but also runs food for work and food for training activities for households. ActivitiesThis project will provide food assistance to the most vulnerable members of the population, mainly children suffering from severe malnutrition, and help restore the government’s and families’ abilities to cope with environmental and market shocks. Fatouma is a widow and mother of two who receives assistance from World Food Program (WFP) cereal (grain) banks. “When my family’s cereal stocks ran out, I was able to purchase cereals from the bank at moderate prices,” says Fatouma. Towards the end of the lean season when all of her financial resources were exhausted, she was then also able to purchase cereal on credit which she hopes to pay back with her next harvest. “I am glad the cereal bank was there for me and my family when we needed it the most.” Read 3 more "Updates from the Field" | Comment on this update How Else You Can HelpSpread the Word on your Profile, Blog, or WebsitePut a widget for this project on your profile, blog or website to turn your friends into givers.
