To survive in Darfur, you have to have a successful harvest. The rain didn't come early this year, it is too late for the planting of millet, the staple crop, which needs three months growing time to produce a harvest. This means farmers must have sorghum seeds, but few have. We urgently need to provide seeds for the hardest hit villages in the north of Darfur. We aim to provide 3 kgs per family and this year we urgently need help for a minimum of 262 families so that they won't starve in 2015
The rains have come too late and have shortened the growing season in Darfur. This will have a devastating effect on next year's crop. This means that families already know that they face starvation next year. Children already have only one pitiful meal a day, they CANNOT tolerate even less, they simply won't survive.
Because of the late rains there is no guarantee that the millet will have the three months it needs to mature. The sun is too hot and will stunt all changes of further growth. Sorghum has a shorter growing period, and although it is not as palatable, it would provide families with what they need to survive. There are 262 families who urgently need sorghum seed but there are hundreds more that also need our help. Just 3kgs is enough to give a family what they need to survive.
Kids for Kids is determined to provide 3 kgs of sorghum seed for as many families as possible before the end of September. 3 kgs cost approximately $7.00/4.00 per family, including transport (but not administration).
