This project will enable 200 young Early Childhood Education teachers in the Townships around Cape Town to acquire vital computer skills and expand their understanding of stimulating curriculum for the eager learners in their care. These funds will be directed towards teachers under age 24.
Chene (above), aged 23, is an assistant teacher in the 2-3 year old class at Wavecrest Educare. She has always loved children and her dream was to become a social worker. She loves singing and growing up, she was the lead singer in her youth group. "I want to better myself to be an amazing role model," she says. Chene attended our recent teacher training program and is hopeful that we will receive funding to enable us to offer more in the future.
You may think that all young people today are adept with computers, but that is not the case with many young teachers at Early Childhood Education Centres in the Townships around Cape Town. A recent workshop on June 14 covered the areas of computer training and creative activities within the classroom. The computer training involved basic skills such as creating email accounts and documents. Curriculum planning and creative use of recycled materials for artistic expression were also addressed.
Long-term effects of this program impact the teachers, their students and the community as a whole. The teachers who are able to participate in this training will learn valuable skills that will increase their knowledge base, give them a sense of self-worth and allow them to pass on the information to others. The children will benefit from their needs being addressed. The community will benefit from an increased quality of early education, paving the way for a better future for all.
