American Humane Association understands that the way that human beings treat, care for, and relate to pets goes far beyond the issue of animal welfare alone. Engaging children on the grassroots level will best achieve our goal to raise public awareness about how investing in animal welfare and our children can increase the health and cohesion of the community at large.

Engaging children on the grassroots level will best achieve our goal to raise public awareness about how investing in animal welfare and our children can increase the health and cohesion of the community at large.
We plan to develop a comprehensive set of after-school enrichment activities and curricula to educate the next generation of children on the values of compassion. Teacher training manuals will be developed to educate Humane Heroes Club advisors on how to talk to children about caring for the animals in our community and general responsible pet ownership. Materials will provide these adult leaders with fun and easy ways to teach children about taking an empathetic perspective toward animals.
Our intention is to provide educators and youth leaders with quality resources that will assist in supporting students' knowledge of current, humane topics. We aim to establish a Humane Heroes club in each of the 50 states, reinforcing best practices for healthy pet ownership and fostering values of compassion in thousands of children across the country. Finally, we aim to pursue collaborative relationships with existing youth programs that promote volunteerism and community engagement.
