Summary

The David Lynch Foundation has partnered with New Horizons School - a transitional school for at risk and formerly incarcerated youth in New Haven, CT - to give their students a highly effective tool for self-regulation and self-development. The Quiet Time Program, utilizing the Transcendental Meditation technique, has been shown to reduce stress, improve wellbeing and significantly increase test scores and graduation rates.

Challenge

New Horizons School is designed to serve students who haven't succeeded in traditional schools because of failing grades, truancy, criminal activity, and other social, academic, and emotional issues. Forty percent of the students are on parole. These students often have difficulties concentrating and are prone to violent and destructive behavior.

Solution

The David Lynch Foundation's Quiet Time Program, using the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique, is a high-impact stress reduction program for young people that enhances healthy human development and effective learning. Studies have shown that Quiet Time, which has been implemented in many schools across the U.S. and around the world, has dramatically reduced student stress, in-school violence, and absenteeism, all while improving graduation rates and test scores.

Long-Term Impact

Research indicates that TM is of significant value for students. Key findings include a 10% improvement in academic achievement, 40% reduction in symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, and 86% decrease in suspension rates over two years. Meditating students also score higher on intelligence tests and standardized tests and exhibit higher graduation rates compared to non-meditating students. The Quiet Time Program gives students a lifelong tool for managing stress and self-regulation.
