Background:
Raksha Nepal has been actively working for women and children for the past 10 years. This organization supports those girls, women and their children who have been through different types of violence (sexual abuse, domestic violence, trafficking, polygamy victim, etc.) or who are vulnerable to violence. It also works in favor of the victims to raise their voice to the concerned institutions and help them get justice.
In the same context, since last 5 years, Raksha has established a Child Transit Home for those vulnerable children who have gone through negligence, orphans, sexually abused and other violations. The main objective to keep them in this transit home is to prevent them from following the wrong path and enjoy the basic rights like other normal children. Moreover, these children also get opportunity to make their life better. Raksha Nepal has been trying its best to give a safe and family environment to these vulnerable children, with limited funding source. RN with personal contributions has extended different kinds of support to more than 2500 children so far. Currently, it has 30 children in its transit home. RN has been coordinating with different organizations for their secure future.

Main Activities:

• Final year Examinations and Results
• School Admission
• Psychosocial Health Counseling (Group/individual)
• Children Repatriated and Newcomers
• Regular Yoga and Meditation Activities
• Birthday and various festivals Celebration

Activities in Details:

  • Final year Examinations and Results: There were 30 children sitting for the final exams. Out of thirty children seventeen children got Distension in their final exam. Rest of the other children got first Division with good marks. None of them had to repeat in the same class. Results of this exams. has been attached as Annex I
Gyanu, who has been staying in the Transit home was able to sit for School Leaving Certificate Exams. Has passed in the 1st division with 68%, which has boosted her morale and confidence level and helped her to go forward in life.

  • School Admission: There are 30 children in Raksha Nepal Transit Home, out of which 28 have been admitted in school. Rest 2 girls are being supported by other individual donors. Children are attending classes from nursery to 9th grade.

As per school policy, it charges admission fee for all 28 children, only the monthly fee is discounted for those who get scholarship (out of 28 children admitted, 8 children received monthly fee exemption) but they are liable to pay admission, examination, computer, library, stationery fees, etc. to school.

  • Psychosocial Health Counseling: A psychosocial and health counseling, a pilot program for 4 months, was conducted by the Psychologist. Following are the various activities and observation done for the children living in the transit home. The children were divided into groups of three for this activity. The play dough was provided to each child before the activity started. The children were supposed to make an image which they dislike the most or feel angry about. They were then asked to do whatever they liked with that image. Children were biting, beating, kicking and showing full anger and rage to this image. After some break the groups were again asked to make an image which they liked the most that could be best person, or the best place. Children were very relative and made different places they had visited and people they liked the most.
  • Children Repatriated and Newcomers: As per the agreement with the mothers of the children, they are repatriated back to their family, once the mothers are capable of handling them on their own. During this reporting period 2 children went back with their mothers. Rima and Saina went back to their village in Lalitpur and one in Kathmandu District. Both the mothers had received capacity building training from Raksha Nepal.
In the meantime, 3 children have joined Child Transit Home, such as, Sanjita, Mukta and Mahima. Sanjita’s mother was sexually exploited victim, Mukta’s both parents are HIV+ and her mother is at the last stage of her ailment and father is not in the scene, Mahima is herself the victim of gang rape and trafficking.
  • Regular Yoga and Meditation Activities: For alertness of mind body, RN has been running regular yoga and meditation activities for all the children and other elders living in its home. Luckily, one Doctor and Yoga expert visited the home and shared knowledge about yoga and its benefits, which has encouraged everyone living here.
  • Birthday and various festivals Celebration: RN regularly celebrates each child’s birthday that are living in its home. About 7 children’s birthday was celebrated during this reporting period. 2 friends of RN came to celebrate their children’s birthday during April and June months.
  • Children Made a Histry in South Korea: 7 children are selected for the international taekwondo competition in South Korea. RN since past 2 years has established Raksha Taekwondo Dojang under which all those living in its home are receiving regular Taekwondo training. In a short span of time, these children have successfully demonstrated best performance at the different local and district level competitions. As a result, 7 best performers have been selected to participate in the 8th World Taekwondo Cultural Expo. Competition, Muju, South Korea, from July 4-7, 2014. In this week long program, these children will be competing in various tournaments.

We can easily presume how this international level competition exposure has inspired the lives of these children who have been the victims of different violence - some have lost their parents and their loved one at a tender age and been through indescribable hurt. Through these sports they have demonstrated their personality in front of all the players at the international level competition by proudly waving Nepali flag. The proudest part of this competition has borne its fruits in the form of gold, silver and bronze medals by these children. This has been achieved and has created a history in the Nepali Taekwondo sports.
