Under the daily challenges of occupation and colonization our children grow up facing violence, destruction and division. The young communities of Deheishe (a refugee camp) and Khirbet Zakaria (a village surrounded by settlements) lack opportunities for the teenagers to develop and recreate. We want to bring them together this summer! Help Karama to arrange summer camps with workshops and trips, so we further strengthen Palestinian society and stimulate a responsible and unified young generation
The refugee camps and villages suffering from nearby Jewish settlements know very similar problems. Limited education, no possibilities to build recreational spaces and often a scene to frequent violence from the Jewish army or settlers. While the youth lives only a few kilometers away from each, they never meet due to the restrictions on movement. During the summer months there should be opportunities from them to meet, get to know each other and develop crucial life skills in a safe setting.
Karama will repeat the successful summer camp from 2013 and bring together groups of teenagers from both places. They will enjoy a program with recreational activities as well as workshops that stimulate learning, friendship, leadership and responsibility towards nature and each other. We will work with local Karama volunteers and social workers, while international volunteer will contribute with new classes. Such a positive experience can impact any girl's or boy's life for the better!
Karama center empowers refugee children and youth to become active citizens who shape their future in a peaceful and constructive way. So far over 1300 children improved their performance in school and society because of our safe haven for education, opportunities, joy. Our Palestinian volunteers who have been members of Karama for several years are the living proof of this; many now study at university (a rare occurrence in Palestinian refugee camps) and play major roles in the local society.
