Seizure-Response Dog for Lola

A microproject by Chelsea Hutchison Foundation
Seizure-Response Dog for Lola

Summary

It will change the life of this precious young girl who deals with seizures on on a regular basis. Seizure response dogs are a special type of service dog, specifically trained to help someone who has epilepsy or a seizure disorder. The Chelsea Hutchison Foundation is currently fundraising to be able to provide a grant to Lola and Elsa. Due to the differing needs between each case, every potential seizure dog receives specialized training

Challenge

Elsa is in her final stages of training for Lola. Lola will soon be able to do things other 9 yr-old girls like to do. Elsa will give Lola a life again and she can do pretty much everything she wants, with Elsa by her side. If Lola has a seizure, Elsa gets the rescue meds which allows Mom to stay by her side. In time, Elsa may be able to alert her family before a seizure so they can be sure Lola is safe braced for what is to come.

Solution

Lola will feel at ease with Elsa by her side at night and while at school. Elsa will be used to alert Lola's parents or teacher when a seizure is occurring, retrieve rescue meds and be with her to offer both comfort and reassurance throughout her seizures.

Long-Term Impact

This particular project will provide seizure-response dogs for people living with epilepsy, greatly increasing their chances of surviving life-threatening episodes that may arise. This project will also raise awareness about SUDEP to encourage further support of individuals living with epilepsy, their families, and their communities.
