USAIM is partnering with IOM again to fund a 2014/2015 rescue of children who are trafficked into the fishing industry in Ghana's Lake Volta region. Unfortunately, last year there was not enough funding to carry out a rescue mission. Our goal for this year is to rescue 20 children from the fishing trade. This project will support ONE of those 20 children. $9,500 funds an entire rescue including 3 months of rehabilitation and 2.5 years monitoring and reintegration.
Countless children, as young as four years old, are trafficked into the fishing industry in Ghana's Lake Volta region. These children are deprived of their education and forced to work long and grueling hours on the boat, often with little food and in highly dangerous conditions.On the bright side, community members have been employing community educations programs to help put an end to the practice of child trafficking in Ghana - but this takes time. Many children need protection now!
This project will support the rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration for one child who has been trafficked to work in the fishing industry in Ghana's Lake Volta region. We are hoping to rescue 20 children in 2015- helping this one child can make all the difference.
This project aims to assist in the prevention and combating of child trafficking in Ghana with the view to reducing one of the worst forms of child labor and exploitation through identification, rescue, rehabilitation, return, and reintegration of victims. IOM also encourages communities to reject child trafficking and child labor exploitation as viable options for supporting the livelihoods of families or fishermen.
