Dear Donors,
You would be happy to know that the tailoring training for the inmates of the Special Prison for Women in Trichirappalli is started on the 11th of January 2013. Thanks to you dear donors who made it possible and supported this task of training the women.
The trainees are taught from the basic of pedaling the sewing machine, stitching a hand kerchief, petticoat, skirt, shimmies, blouse for girls and finally the blouse for women(it is the most wanted item by the trainees as they can stitch their own and it fetches more income). The trainees are asked to take up notes, draw the sketch, taught the proportion of measurements for each garment, do the cutting in paper, then asked to cut in cloth and then stitch.
Since the blouse is the dress item mostly worn by the women in Tamil Nadu, blouse stiching will fetch them a good income once they get out of the prison and start their small unit. A minimum of Rs.5000/- (100$) is enough to buy a good sewing machine. And by stiching a blouse one can get an income of $1 to 2 depending on the model of the blouse.
The trainer Mrs. Rajapriya says that she is very happy to see the trainees turning up for the training sharp at 9 a.m. each day and there is no absentee so far. The trainees are very much interested in learning the making of the different garments. They are eagerly waiting to stitch their own blouses.
One of the trainee is imprisoned by the complaint of her sister in law under the domestic violence prevention act. The crime she committed was scolding her sister in law during an argument. She says that once she goes out of the prison, she will buy a machine and start stiching blouses of her neighbours. And I will regain my dignity she says.
Thank you dear donors for supporting these women. Kindly spread words about the work of New Life to your friends and relatives and help us help such women who are inside the prison for emotional outbursts.
With regards
F. Beatrice Vanaja
