NFTE Fairchester offers an entrepreneurial program that gets students engaged in learning. With this project NFTE will be able to put 20 students through our curriculum, giving the participants access to potentially life-changing business education.
Students who drop out of high school often cite a lack of relevancy in the subjects they are learning as their reason for doing so. They feel a disconnect between their studies and the real world. Their math, reading, and writing classes don't relate to finding a job or starting a business. Not only does this not effectively teach young people the vital skills they need, it also distances them from education as an institution.
NFTE's program tries to fix this by connecting relevant, 21st century skills to our curriculum. With the creation of the final business plan project, students combine math in the form of financials, with literacy skills in the form of marketing strategies and executive summaries. Youth in the NFTE program learn skills directly relevant to future employment. This project will fund 20 students in the NFTE program, from curricular materuaks to fields trips to digital resources.
By working to keep at-risk students engaged in their school work, NFTE spurs its participants to graduate high school and dare to dream of a brighter future. Whether they pursue higher education, enter the workforce, or start their own business, NFTE instills an entrepreneurial mindset in young people so they can plan for success. Since opening in 1999 NFTE Fairchester, serving Westchester County, NY and Fairfield County, CT, has served more than 15,000 students from low-income communities.
