Pay Wilkens' Salary for a Year

$100 $2,060

Wilkens teaches the beginner class at the English in Mind Institute (EIM), a school which teaches English as a vocational school for free to more than 150 students. Wilkens has faced big challenges. "[Before the earthquake] I was working as a tailor [But] my house wasn't safe after the earthquake so since I work from home, I had to stop my business" Despite the challenges he's faced, Wilkens didn't give up, and today he loves teaching. But without donors like you, EIM would have to close.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

More than two thirds of Haitian adults lack formal employment and more than 50% of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day. Despite high unemployment, there is actually a shortage of skilled labour in Port au Prince. English speakers can find work in hotels, restaurants, and offices, yet there are virtually no free English schools. By paying Wilkens' salary, you'll not only give Wilkens the gainful employment he needs to build a secure future, but ensuring that Wilkens can teach job skills

How will this project solve this problem?

By keeping Wilkens working as a teacher at the English in Mind Institute, we can both ensure that he has the income he needs to find a safe home and that his students learn the skills they need to follow in his footsteps to gainful employment.

Potential Long Term Impact

EIM supports Wilkens as he moves toward self-sufficiency and helps the students he teaches reach the same goal. By donating, you'll help Wilkens and his students build a secure future.
