Summary

Leadership Initiatives first fish farming program in Birshi Nigeria created jobs for 15 subsistence farmers allowing them to send their children to school and save countless lives by offering affordable mud fish solving the vitamin B deficiency issue in the surrounding communities. Challenge

Erratic rainfall over the course of several years left farmers in the once-thriving villages with drastically reduced harvests. Many of the villagers are suffering from malnutrition, including severe vitamin B deficiencies. Village infrastructures have deteriorated due to a lack of resources with which to make repairs. The Birshi Fish Farming expansion project will replicate the success of Birshi by creating new fish farming in surrounding areas creating jobs while growing affordable fish.

Solution

Fish-Farmers of Birshi will provide an affordable source of Vitamin B to their region, while at the same time creating 15 new jobs for youths. The project will also teach them new farming techniques utilizing used fish water and rain retention to rebuild their damaged farming areas while at the same time allowing farmers to be able to afford to send their children to school. Fish not large enough to sell will distributed to the sick and elderly saving more lives

Long-Term Impact

Develop independent profit-generating businesses that serve as models for growth in surrounding communities. Project beneficiaries fill voids in the local economy while improving their families' health, education and financial stability. Previous leaders have sent their brothers, sisters and children to school, helped invest in new businesses within the community, offered new services to community members such as the disabled, establishing infrastructure for the future growth of Nigeria.
