Usalama House is grateful to our supporters for making it possible for us to support LGBT youth who are disowned and kicked out of his parent’s home, because of his sex orientation so far Usalama House has helped 4 youth go to school and obtain requisite skills. Though our organization is committed to ensuring all LGBT youth have equal opportunities to access education, health services and having a family, there are many challenges hindering our progress.
The main challenge is the legal status in our country that make it difficult LGBT youth to continue with their education in public schools for free or at minimum cost. Is only possible to send these poor LGBT youth to Private schools (vocational training centres) at high cost between $500 and $800 a semester
Yuri became a victim of discrimination, rejection and violence and ended up a homeless but fortunately LGBT Voice through USALAMA HOUSE project he found a home and now pursuing his career as a fashion designer. It is our hope that this project will help Yuri and other LGBT youth in Tanzania solve the unemployment and give an opportunity to Yuri to shape his own future.
Yuri’s Story: I was in senior two (9th grade) when I was expelled from school, when I went back home my parents threw me out and told me to look for my real parents because they were not ready to have a gay son, I had no where to I spent a night outside our house hopping that my father would bring me in the next morning but thing turned to be more worse when my father saw me, He threatened to kill me and throw me in a river to hide the evidence. I then decided to ask some of my friends what to do, and they told me to go far where no one could see me, that is how I ended up in Dar es salaam and lived on the streets for 6 months. Thanks to LGBT Voice; I’m now living a happy life and will soon become a fashion designer, I plan to open a store and employ some gay youth. I still need $790 to complete my course , please help where possible.
