Thank you so much for all your donations to NFTE New York Metro’s NYC Generation Tech (GenTech) program.  Our summer coding programs are well underway as a new crop of students takes part in our unique tech-based entrepreneurship lessons.  Students learn coding skills and couple them with NFTE’s business and entrepreneurship classes to create and pitch an idea for a mobile application.  After an intensive two-week coding boot camp (in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript), the young entrepreneurs have formed teams to begin formulating ideas for their apps.  NFTE offers them access to industry mentors as they move through their summer GenTech classes.  Your donations made this year’s classes possible.  On behalf of all our students, teachers, and volunteers, we cannot thank you enough for your donations on GlobalGiving.

A new element in this year’s GenTech class is NFTE’s partnership with Cornell Tech, the university’s applied sciences campus in the city.  While students normally undergo their coding boot camp in New York City, this year the experience moved to Cornell’s Ithaca campus.  This allowed students to visit the Ivy League campus and receive advice from Cornell Tech graduate students relating to their new apps.  Says Christopher M., a junior at Bayside High School in Queens, “We got to see what the campus is like, and what an education there would be like, and to open our eyes to the kind of things we'd need to go through to get here.”  He cites his favorite exercises during the course as those pertaining to target-market research and venture capital.

The technology, computers, and software, as well as elements of the Cornell trip, were paid by the funds we received through your GlobalGiving donations. All of our students are incredibly grateful for this opportunity as they prepare their apps for the final pitch presentations this September. One member of the NFTE family who is incredibly excited for the Demo Night Finals is NFTE New York Metro board member Holly W. (who is a GenTech sponsor herself).  She undertook the trip to Ithaca with the future tech-titans.  “We are investing in helping these kids have successful lives inspired and nurtured by entrepreneurship and a top university learning environment.”  Your support, along with that of board members like Holly, is helping NFTE invest in the next generation of tech CEOs.  We expect to see these students go on to achieve big things, all thanks to your support.
