Summary

Erin Nurfauziah is the fifth child of seven siblings coming from a poor background. Erin was placed in YUM's orphanage in 2005 when she was 11 years old in hopes that she would be given a better education than her parents could provide. Erin has not disappointed her parents; she has studied hard, helped YUM by being a VTC tutor and has now won a free enrollment in a top university in Bandung in the faculty of animal sciences. This project aims to help provide for her daily needs at university.

Challenge

In Cipanas, where YUM is located, the unemployment rate for youths aged 16 to 24 is over 60%. Many students cannot afford to finish high school, let alone go to university. Erin was entrusted to YUM by her parents with the hope that she would continue her studies and be able to one day support her family. In a community where girls are married at a young age and unemployment is a huge issue, Erin's example will give hope to many young people, especially women, in the community.

Solution

This project will provide Erin with her daily needs such as a room in a dormitory, daily food, clothes, health expenses as well as her university needs such as books, stationary, transportation to get to university, research and study expenses as well as other activities for a period of 1 (one) year. All these expenses are substantial and cannot be afforded by Erin's family. Though Erin has obtained free enrollment to the university, her daily needs are not provided for.

Long-Term Impact

Erin is the first disadvantaged youth that YUM has helped that has been accepted, with free enrollment, at a top university in Indonesia (University of Padjajaran in Bandung). Her success can be an example to other youths, proving that if you study hard and desire a better life, your dreams can come true. Through this project, we can also show that every young person has the ability to change their life as long as they try their best.
