We didn't know if this project would be funded, but we strongly believed in the possibilities of helping many people with the purchase of a greenhouse. With that in mind, we took the plunge and purchased and installed a greenhouse in Mombasa, Kenya. I had the pleasure of visiting the project two weeks ago and friends, it is amazing!
The tomatoes are just mind-blowing! The fact is that tomatoes are imported to Mombasa because they are virtually impossible to grow in the terrain there. But our greenhouse has managed to produce over 350lbs of tomatoes so far! Yes, it is just incredible and the quality of the fruit is wonderful.
With the drip irrigation system that was set outside the greenhouse (all part of the price of the greenhouse), kale, spinach, sweet potatoes and other nutritious vegetables have been grown. I wanted to dance when I saw the veggies growing, so I did. Samuel, the caretaker of this small project, and I danced. We danced in thanksgiving for you who supported this dream and we danced for the children who are benefitting from the food they receive.
Right after visiting the greenhouse, we took some of the veggies to a meeting for HIV+ mothers and their babies. The babies are negative due to care given to their mothers while pregnant and during the birth. Now, these little ones benefit from veggies, as do their parents and siblings. Friends, you've done a good thing. You've helped us prove that this project can indeed change the face of hunger, even in the middle of a drought.
Now, we want to multiply this project ten-fold. YES! ten-fold. So, keep your eyes peeled for a new project to support and if you can, please do so. If you can't, know that you've already done a wonderful thing - you've provided hope and training and all sorts of good, good veggies.
