Summary

In Wilmington, NC young ladies between the ages of 13-25 who have been subjected to domestic violence home and are now living in a shelter don't have access to adequate healthy food or the tranquil home life many take for granted. The Community Boys & Girls Club of Wilmington is partnering with The Operation Legacy Project to build their own community garden providing nourishing food in their own back yard and to learn about gardening and agriculture.

Challenge

This garden solution will help the entire central Wilmington, North Carolina community by supplementing an inadequate fresh vegetable/fruit supply and will also beautify the community. The garden is located near 2,000 or more families on Castle Street, in the heart of Wilmington.

Solution

The project will assist young ladies between the ages of 13-25 who have been a part of or in a domestic violence shelter or homeless shelter. They will tend the garden and will learn about the cultivation of food and decorative plants as well as develop their own abilities and self-confidence. The garden will be built and tended by these women and will help to increase their self esteem & to learn about and develop a love for healthy eating.

Long-Term Impact

There are over 2,000 shelters and service programs for victims (growing more and more everyday). The teens who are victims are often looked over and take out their anger throughout their community by committing crimes, turning to drugs, gangs and other forms of violence. Or by withdrawing from school and society all together. By partnering with domestic violence and homeless shelters the Community Boys & Girls Clubs of Wilmington hopes to be a positive influence in these teens' lives.
