This project will provide 5 chickens and contribute to building a chicken coop at the HTDC orphanage. The chicken's eggs will be sold at a profit and that profit will provide for Florentina. 5-year-old Florentina was abandoned by her mom in 2009. She's a girly girl and loves nothing more than donning the older girls' makeup and jewelry! By contributing towards the orphanage's business you'll help provide a sustainable income which will allow the orphanage to keep meeting Florentina's needs.
The orphanage receives no financial support from the government, so they have to care for kids like Florentina on their own. Florentina was very malnourished when she arrived, and she was sick a lot when she was younger. The staff at the orphanage used funds donated by people living overseas to nurse her back to health. The orphanage is thankful for the donors who saved Florentina's life, but relying on handouts leaves them vulnerable. They need to be financially independent.
By helping the orphanage start a business selling eggs to make its own profit, you reduce the orphanage's reliance on the kindness of strangers. That means that the orphanage will be able to meet the needs of kids like Florentina without having to hope for donations. Financial independence helps all the kids in the orphanage's care have a more secure future!
Once we have secured five chickens for every child in the orphanage, for a total of 150 chickens, the orphanage will secure a monthly profit of around $268 after all costs are paid. Those profits will move the orphanage towards financial independence and ensure that the orphanage can survive into the future regardless of where donors choose to give their funds. The older children at the orphanage will also be involved in managing the coop, teaching them important lessons about responsibility.
