Dear Friends and Supporters of Agua Pura-
Thank you so much for your donations to our microproject, training indigenous health workers in Panama. According to GlobalGiving's protocols I wasn’t able to thank you individually, but I do want to tell you about our plans for the money you contributed.
I and my team leave for eastern Panama on July 13th to conduct a workshop for the indigenous Wounaan tribal group. These people live in very remote area called the Darien, just on the border with Columbia. They are beset by many problems including drug smugglers and guerrilla fighters from Columbia, and illegal logging and cattle ranching on their private lands. All these things have contributed to a serious health problems with water pollution and contamination of their drinking water.
As I mentioned in our original proposal our plan is to train and equip local health workers so that they can monitor the water in their communities. Delegates from the different villages will come for a two day training workshop by Agua Pura on modern accurate water testing for fecal contamination. We will then provide testing supplies and instructional materials that they can take back home with them. Our team will also meet with families to show them simple ways to decontaminate their drinking water. We will give them Water Pasteurization Indicators that show when water is pasteurized and safe to drink, and demonstrate easy sanitation techniques.
All this is only possible because of your support. Because of the microproject format I won’t be able to report to you directly about the project when I return, but I will write a summary for our website AguaPuraParaElPueblo.org. I’ll also post a report on our main GlobalGiving site where you can read reports of our various projects.
We’re planning to return to Panama again in January to follow up on the progress of the program, and if you would be interested in traveling with us to see how your donation is being used you can write me directly for more information.
Again, many thanks for your support,
Tom Carter
