CapLight: Assist a Young Entrepreneur!

Summary

Through our "CapLight" illumination source, we provide the lowest cost, energy efficient lighting solution available in Trujillo, Peru. Our product, which utilizes recycled plastic bottles as light fixtures is unlike any other in that it enables populations with minimal or no access to indoor or night time illumination the ability to light their homes. An affordable light will enable families in Trujillo to raise living standards, access education, and use evenings more productively.

Challenge

Our device will offer nighttime illumination to homes and communities in Trujillo, Peru, unable to otherwise afford such a luxury, reduce carbon emissions by reducing demand for kerosene and other fossil fuels, and promote the recycling of thousands of plastic bottles. By augmenting an illumination source, a water filled soda bottle inserted in the roof of a dwelling, we provide the lowest cost, energy efficient lighting solution available to these communities.

Solution

Water diffuses sunlight through the bottle during the day, while our "cap replacement" device, a novel, self contained LED light assembly, delivers a diffuse high energy efficient source of light during the nighttime hours. This inexpensive device is powered from manifold renewable energy sources (solar), thus enabling broad application and is suitable for extreme conditions.

Long-Term Impact

CapLight has a shelf-life of 10 years. Families in Trujillo will continue to benefit from the light for an extended period, thus utilizing additional hours of light to study, converse, and work. Beyond Trujillo, 1.5 billion people across the globe lack access to electricity and would benefit immensely from our product. The cap light has the potential to illuminate indoor areas during the day and night.
