Summary

Camp Shout Out Builds Great Communicators! Great communicators tell their stories using a variety of methods. This project will provide young people who stutter the opportunity to tell their story using video storytelling. Each camper will answer specific questions related to communication and stuttering. The video clips will be used to educate teachers, friends, parents as well as other family members. This project will allow our campers to increase their overall communicative effectiveness.

Challenge

Stuttering is a communication disorder occurring in up to 5% of youth often resulting in significant emotional & social consequences, including communication withdrawal, bullying, & shame. Many youth who stutter experience a great deal of fear when faced with everyday communication tasks such as ordering in a restaurant, speaking in class, or answering the phone. This fear of speaking can have significant academic, social and behavioral ramifications effecting grades and even career choices.

Solution

Video storytelling has become a powerful tool used for a variety of reasons. When this project is fully funded we will be able to introduce our campers to video storytelling. We will help each camper tell their own personal story to be shared with family, friends, and educators. They will discuss stuttering in general and how stuttering specifically impacts their own lives. We believe that increasing awareness about stuttering will help change the world for kids who stutter.

Long-Term Impact

This project will build great communicators by providing training and treatment both directly and indirectly to approximately 200 young people who stutter each year. Camp Shout Out has become a model for the training of speech-language pathologists and graduate students as they seek to deepen their knowledge and and understanding when working with young people who stutter. Camp Shout Out Builds Great Communicators. Great Communicators Change the World. Camp Shout Out is changing the world!
