Junior Scientists at Iracambi is an Environmental Ed program that transforms schoolchildren in Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest into forest guardians. Through hands-on education they learn the science of forestry, collect data on soils and water, and share their discoveries with their families, gaining a new understanding of the forest as a resource to be nurtured and not exploited. Sound conservation practices will qualify farm families for government funding, helping both forests and people.
The project offers 50 young people alternative activities out of school hours to prevent their involvement with gang culture in the low income communities (favelas) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
