Programs

Pilot Project - HIV Screening in Dental Clinics It is proposed that routine provider-initiated screening for HIV infection become an element in standard dental examination. This project will focus, train and support dental clinics that serve the downtown, downtown south. With the appropriate partners, the project will support and introduce HIV screening in up to seven dental clinics. The project will also develop training, resources and an adapted curriculum for dentist clinic staff interested in offering point of care testing. Pilot Clinics The project will partner, support and train up to seven dental clinics that are in regular contact with the high prevelance clients/population. These clinics will provide quantitative and qualitative data on their experience with testing as well as the ratios of testing and the results. From these pilot locations we can develop key pieces in the training and curriculum, and create best practices for other dentistry clinics and dentistry school curriculums, in the hopes of expansion in to other "high-risk" or "hard-to-reach" populations once the project is complete. Dental Clinic Staff Training, Curriculum and Resource Development Recognizing that some dentists may wish to provide this service but lack the training and resources for HIV testing, development of comprehensive training, resources and adapted curriculum will be an important component of this project. In collaboration with the Dental clinical advisor and VCH Clinical lead, the project manager will lead the development of education materials and aid in the delivery of training to provide dental sites with the necessary information on HIV screening as well as resources on linkages to care. Anti-Stigma, HIV Awareness Does HIV Look Like Me? Campaigns The Emmy Award Winning DOES HIV LOOK LIKE ME? The campaign ambassadors, people living with HIV or AIDS, are human rights leaders standing up to flight misconception, stigma and inequality with their faces, voices and individual stories. The ambassadors' ownership over the campaign ensures its sustainability and its relevance in both specific country contexts and internationally. GOALS To educate the general public about HIV and AIDS and to reduce stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV or AIDS. To show people living with HIV and AIDS that they are not alone, and to provide them with the tools, skills and networks to take charge of their lives and redefine living with HIV. To reduce stigma associated with being HIV Positive in the hopes that people living with the disease will not be discriminated against and in turn will make healthier choices for themselves and live better lives. Create materials about people living with HIV that other people will be able to relate, in-turn getting tested and make more informed sexual health choices. To produce the DOES HIV LOOK LIKE ME? campaign with a diverse group of local people living with HIV or AIDS, who are identified, recruited and will be supported by local partners. To provide additional training and support for Ambassadors to be active in their communities, schools and in the media to advocate for their rights, challenge stigma and discrimination, change policies, encourage and support testing and access to treatment.
