Great Progress in the First Year!!

ILP has been able to make great strides in this project within the first year. We are delighted to share with you the current scenario compared to the start of the academic year. (New pictures have also been added to the Gallery).
 
 
Pre-Schools
  1. 10 semi-functional and 6 non-functional pre-schools (Anganwadis) have now been transformed from mere food distributing centers to fully functional pre-schools that work from 9 AM to 1:30 PM.
  2. Attendance in these Anganwadis has improved up to 75%.
  3. Mothers Committees have  been activated in all 16 Anganwadis and 301  members completed orientation to understanding their roles and responsibilities towards the pre-school.
  4. The teachers and helpers at all the Anganwaids completed orientation on their roles and responsibilities on tpics ranging from daily activities, maintenance of children’s data, disability, utilizing government schemes, health and hygiene.
  5. All 16 centres have been given play and learning materials thus helping children to remain in the centre for long hours. Also given drinking water storage drum. In 10 centres hand washing is followed strictly by the Anganwadi workers.

Schools

  1. 131 of the 371 out-of-school children were enrolled / re-enrolled into schools in 20 villages
  2. 554 community members / leaders attended meetings to raise awareness on the need for schooling 
  3. Street plays were organized in 20 villages to educate people about child rights and compulsory education
  4. School attendance was increased from 30%-50% to 50%-60%
  1. Play and Learning materials were provided to 18 schools. Examples: cricket kit, Volleyball, Football, Jump Rope, Flash Cards, Maps of India and Jharkhand.
  2. Child Rights Clubs have been promoted in all 18 schools and children were taught to identify difficulties in their schools and bring them to the notice of their teachers. 349 child rights clubs members attended such orientation sessions.
  3. School Management Committees (SMCs) were activated in all the 18 schools. 589 members attended orientation meetings that covered the duties, powers of the SMCs
  4. Women sitting alongside men in meetings was unheard of in this society. Today, all the women members of the SMCs attend the SMC meetings along with the men!
  5. Chetna Vikas is one of the leading members of Right To Education (RTE) Monitoring Group in Jharkhand to monitor RTE implementation in the state. They participated in a series of meetings and presented the progress made in these 18 schools.

Launch of Community Involvement Programs

Report Period: July 2011 - Sept. 2011

Dear All,

India Literacy Project (ILP) has been blessed in the year of 2011 with incredible generosity of our donors from GlobalGiving community.ILP and Chetna Vikas (NGO partner in India) together are off to a great start on their literacy mission to change the lives of 1000s of children in the villages of Saraiyahat block of Jharkhand, India. 

"A wave of positive change has already started touching the feet of many in this rural area and it is just the beginning...!"

We have a list below outlining the highlights of the first quarter since program's inception:
  • Staff recruitment and ongoing training 
  • One round of community meetings in all 20 villages informing people about the importance of children education.
  • Started attendance monitoring in all 15 Anganwadi Centers (pre-schools). And average student attendance has gone up from almost 40% to 55%. One of the observation to Dumarthar Middle Schoold sighted the attendance of almost 81%.
  • After commencing the program, teachers' attendance is regular. The teachers of 4 Anganwadi centers have started to distribute the teaching material.
  • Achieved capacity building of Mothers Committee in 6 Anganwadi Centers with the total attendance of 199 people.
  • Chetna Vikaas members performed house visits to educate, explain and insist the parents on the re-enrollment of their dropped out children.
  • Appointed 5 para teachers in 5 schools to educate community and help organizing VEC (Village Education Committee) meetings 
  • Provided detailed orientation on education and schooling system to SMC (School Management Committee) members (According to them it was the first time they got the understanding of the education and school)
  • Chetna Vikas started efforts in the direction to activate Child Right Clubs (CRC) in schools as per the government guidelines.
