Programs

Reaching Hand is a registered Charitable Trust started in 1996 to work with vulnerable children, marginalized women & deprived families to empower them to lead a life of hope, self-worth and dignity. It envisions an empowered future for all by acting as a catalyst for social change. Empowerment of children, women & families from weaker sections of society through quality education, health care and skill development is the key focus of Reaching Hand. Programs of Reaching Hand The programmatic activities of Reaching Hand aim at bringing about physical, mental and social development of children - boys and girls - in a holistic manner through the participation of children, parents, families and community at large. Through our wide range of programs, we help children and families living in extreme poverty to meet their basic needs and find a restored sense of hope, self-worth, and human dignity. Founded in 1996, Reaching Hand has been working to transform the lives of underprivileged children and marginalized women by implementing the following programs: "Children's New Home" (A child protection & care center) - Reaching Hand has been working in the areas of protection, care and rights of children since 2006. It has two homes for orphan, destitute and runaway children in Bangalore with 23 girls and 27 boys. Children are raised up in a homely atmosphere and always encourage to reintegrating with their family members. Recently we have opened two more temporary preventive centers for children who are vulnerable to exploitation and access to violence in Bijapur & Hubli. The core objective of this project is to prevent, protect and reduce the suffering of the abandoned, destitute and vulnerable children by providing them the necessary support such as their most basic needs, best health care services and quality education with life skills so that they can be mainstreamed and become productive members of their own society. Scholarship/Sponsorship - The objective of the project is to provide adequate education to the most meritorious and under-privileged students who are school dropouts and have discontinued their studies for varieties of reason. They are at risk and access to violence. Therefore we intervene at the right time and provide them different opportunities to make them productive citizens and encourage them to lead a better future through good education right from a tender age. Every year we manage to support 60 underprivileged children through this program. Women empowerment through skill development - To empower marginalized women by providing skill based training to make them self-sufficient so that they can contribute to their family income that earns them a place of respect and pride is the main objective of this project. We have been successful in empowering 72 women every year through this program. Women has started earning by working in a tailoring shop or putting a sewing machine at home. The income from the skill development program ranges from Rs. 1000 - 1500 per month. While some of them engaged in it on a part time basis to supplement their income, for others it is their primary source of income. Government School Adoption Program (GSAP) - The objective of school adoption program is to convert backward rural and urban Government Schools into Model Schools so that they are on par with the best run city schools in terms of infrastructure and academic performance with extracurricular activities. Through this program we train the teachers on effective management of students and classes. Through this program we have adopted the Chanasandra Government Primary School where more than 130 children are studying from our target communities. Reaching Hand is assisting the children by providing them free uniforms, shoes, textbooks and stationery and has also constructed proper classrooms for the students, separate toilets for girls and boys with drinking water facilities. This is a huge encouragement for school management & parents of our communities to motivate the children in attending the school regularly and that impact in reducing the school dropouts and eliminating child labor. Health Camp: Even after decades of freedom, India is struggling to provide basic health services to its people. According to government sources, in India 45 children die every hour due to respiratory infections. 1 child dies every 2 minutes due to diarrhea. And annually, about 2 million children under 5 years of age die due to preventable diseases. The situation calls for timely care and diagnosis which can reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality especially among children and women. Reaching Hand's health camps is one such special initiative to provide health care services to meet the immediate health care needs of the marginalized community in remote rural areas and slums through standalone camps. Reaching Hand organizes customized health camps extensively across its target communities offering comprehensive health services - curative, preventive, primitive and referral, to a large number of people in selected intervention areas. This Health Camps aims at reaching out to at least 500 families in 2 years time and expects to improve the health seeking behaviour among the community. The uniqueness of the model lies in its comprehensive approach where health promotion and prevention are given equal importance while curative care is administered. Feeding Program: Reaching Hand is committed to fight against poverty and hunger. Among the poor in our communities, there is often not enough food at home for the family and especially for the children. The Feeding Program caters to the need of the family and communities through education, encouragement and diet. The diet of 25 neediest families is identified every year from the poorest community in Bijapur and supplemented with most needed groceries and provisions for a month. This program is a gateway for Reaching Hand's education, medical and livelihood programs. The Feeding Program leads to an increased level of hope and dignity for recipients, increasing their capacity to effectively fight against poverty. 7. FUTURE ACTIVITIES: Reaching Hand's programs aim at reduction of vulnerability among disadvantaged communities through measures of people's willful participation in their own advancement and the programs on the anvil are: Provide quality education to more than 2000 underprivileged children in our ten target communities with school adoption programs within in 3 years Continue to fight for the rights of children against exploitation and provide needed protection to the most vulnerable children Women empowerment through promotion of sustainable livelihood impacting 100 more women's life in the year 2013-2014 Make provision of Child Care Services available by developing child care centers sheltering to 500 children by the year 2012-2015 Promoting Health and Environmental Sanitation, touching the lives of 200 children who are affected and infected by HIV/AIDS Skill Development for Employment Generation giving income to 200 youths girls though its proposed Ritz Life Skill center in the year 2013-2014 Nurturing the environment through effective natural resource management Contributing to the cause of Food and Energy Security
